Frequently Asked Questions: The BEAM Fluorescence Module for Microscopy
Screen model organisms with maximal efficiency using the new BEAM™ fluorescence module! BEAM transforms standard stereo microscopes into fluorescence microscopes, providing a cost-effective and compact method for rapid visualization of Drosophila, C. elegans, Zebrafish, Arabidopsis, and more.
Give your research lab a glow up!
In a collaborative and busy research environment, shared equipment can be a frustrating bottleneck. Many labs only have one or two fluorescence microscopes which, though essential for final imaging, are also needed for routine tasks like sorting organisms or checking for transgenic markers.

The BEAM™ fluorescence module provides a practical solution. BEAM is an LED-based attachment that converts standard, bench-top stereo microscopes into fluorescence microscopes.
Frequently asked questions about the BEAM fluorescence module:
- Will BEAM fit my stereo microscope? BEAM fits most standard stereo microscopes. The ring mount fits objectives 35 to 67 mm in diameter. An oversize adaptor for objectives up to 85 mm is available on request. The microscope is not included.
- What can I see with BEAM? BEAM shows green fluorescence, including GFP and other molecules excited by blue light. It uses a blue LED with 460 nm peak excitation and a 508 nm longpass emission filter.
- Which samples is it used for? Common uses are screening and viewing C. elegans, Drosophila, zebrafish, and plants that express green fluorescent reporters.
- Can I take photos or video? Yes. You can capture images and video with a standard smartphone adapter or your existing microscope camera. A phone adapter is not part of the kit.
- What comes in the box? The base with adjustment rails, universal microscope mount, light engine, magnetic emission filter, protective shield, USB-C cable, and quick start guide.
- How is it powered? BEAM runs on USB-C power (5 V, 0.35 A). Add it to your purchase at no charge, or use your own UL-listed or otherwise certified USB-C adapter.
- How do I set it up? Setup has three steps: assemble the base and light engine, attach the mount under the objective, and aim the light at the center of the field of view. Keep the sample within 1.5 in (40 mm) of the lamp tip. Brightness adjusts from 10 to 100%.
- How do I get the best contrast? Use a frosted or black stage plate under the sample. Some surfaces fluoresce in the background, so adjust the lamp angle for your sample.
- Is the blue light safe? The protective shield reduces exposure to reflected blue light. Keep the shield closed and locked during use, and do not look directly at the lamp.
- Does it need maintenance? BEAM needs no routine calibration or maintenance. Clean the filter and shield with a microfiber cloth. Do not submerge or autoclave it.
- What is the warranty? BEAM is covered against defects in materials and workmanship for 12 months from the purchase date.
