Notice regarding Chromebook support for mini8 thermal cyclers
This notice, intended for miniPCR mini8 thermal cycler users who rely on a Chromebook connection, addresses the consequences of Google’s announced phasing out of Chrome Apps (legacy Chrome Web Store apps).
Please disregard this notice if ANY of the following apply to you:
- You are NOT a mini8 thermal cycler owner (i.e., you use mini8X, mini16X, or mini16)
- You do NOT use a Chromebook to connect to your mini8 thermal cycler.
Is my unit affected by Google’s phasing out of Chrome Web Store apps?
Your unit is affected if your mini8 thermal cycler has a serial number between mini8-100 and mini8-10580.
What is not changing?
Your mini8 thermal cycler will continue to operate normally when programmed using:
- Windows
- macOS
- Android tablets
- Amazon Fire tablets
No action is required if you use any of the platforms above.
What is changing?
You will no longer be able to program mini8 thermal cyclers using Chromebooks. This is due to Google’s phasing out of Chrome Web Store apps.
What are my options?
You may choose one of the following:
- Switch operating systems

- Use Windows, macOS, Android, or Amazon Fire tablets if available.
- You must continue using your existing white USB cable, and you may need an adapter if your device has only USB-C ports.

- Pre-program your mini8

- If you must use Chromebooks, you can pre-program your machines.

- Exchange your mini8 for a mini8X

- mini8X models can connect to Chromebooks that support Bluetooth connections.
- Note: miniPCR connection to Chromebooks via USB is no longer supported.

How does the Exchange Program* work? (US only)
If your mini8 is affected, you are eligible to exchange it for a mini8X under these terms:
- Pay $120 per unit by using this link
- Return your mini8 thermal cycler to miniPCR bio (UPS Ground shipping is included)
- miniPCR bio will send you a new mini8X (UPS Ground shipping is included)
