Bring Biology TEKS-aligned biotechnology labs to your classroom with miniPCR
In its latest update, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) Biology standards have been expanded to include an understanding of current biotechnology. While biotechnology is specifically listed in the updated TEKS standards (see topic B.7(D)), it’s important to note that biotechnology can be applied to impart a practical understanding of topics throughout the biology curriculum. What better way for students to discuss the importance of these critical topics than by experiencing them hands-on using a biotechnology lab?
At miniPCR bio, we offer inquiry-based, hands-on lab investigations that explore a range of TEKS Biology concepts, such as biomolecules and cells, gene expression, and inheritance. Our labs invite students to experience TEKS science practices as they investigate problems and collect data using appropriate scientific equipment, develop evidence-supported explanations, and engage in scientific argumentation.
You can use miniPCR Learning Labs to teach several important TEKS Biology concepts:
Introduce students to the functions of biomolecules with the Sickle Cell Genetics Learning Lab
Baby Marie Robinson needs to be tested for sickle cell disease. Work through the Robinson family’s medical histories and perform genetic testing for sickle cell disease using gel electrophoresis.
TEKS Biology alignment:
- Science Concept 5: Biomolecules and cells (Topic A)
- Science Concept 7: Gene expression (Topics A, B, C, and D)
- Science Concept 8: Inheritance (Topic B)
- Science Concept 10: Mechanisms of evolution (Topic B)
Explore the process of protein synthesis with the BioBits®: Central Dogma Learning Lab
Cell-free technology and fluorescent outputs allow students to directly visualize the flow of genetic information, from DNA to RNA to protein, all in real-time and with minimal preparation.
TEKS Biology alignment:
- Science Concept 7: Gene expression (Topics B, and D)
Investigate the role of enzymes with the P51™ Enzyme Lab: β-Gal Glow Learning Lab
Use an inquiry-based approach to investigate enzyme activity. Measure the effect of pH, temperature, concentration, and competitive inhibition on enzyme reaction rates.
TEKS Biology alignment:
- Science Concept 7: Gene expression (Topic D)
- Science Concept 11: Metabolic Processes and Enzymes (Topic B)
